Nature-based solutions

Nature-based solutions refer to actions or policies that use nature and biodiversity to solve some of societies' most challenging issues. These solutions involve protecting, restoring, and sustainably managing ecosystems to increase their resilience, biodiversity and the ability to combat societal challenges.

Some examples of nature-based solutions include but are not limited to:

  • building more biodiverse cities
  • keeping forests standing
  • developing new forests and ecosystems where they were once lost
  • the sustainable management of land
  • protecting and restoring coral reefs (however, we may not be able to do this in Newcastle-under-Lyme)

Issues that could be solved by nature-based solutions include:

  • food poverty
  • lack of clean water
  • eroding coastlines
  • making land less susceptible to flooding
