Newcastle is flying the flag in support of England’s World Cup Lionesses.

The Cross of St George is flying in Queens Gardens outside Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s Castle House headquarters.

It will remain proudly in place until after Sunday’s football World Cup final between England and Spain.

A spokesman for Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council said:

Not only are we delighted to see England make the final after so much hard work and dedication, but we also hope that this high-profile exposure for women’s football will encourage more women and young girls to take part.

Linked to the promotion of women’s football, the Borough Council recently announced the building of new changing rooms with toilets and showers at the Wammy sports fields.

The changing rooms and pitches are managed day-to-day by Newcastle Town FC and the club, which runs 55 junior boys’ and girls’ teams, intends using the new facilities as a springboard to promote women’s football and to cater for players with a disability.

The Football Association’s national training base, St George’s Park, is based in Staffordshire and the Lionesses prepared there being flying down under.

The final, being played in Australia, kicks off at 11am UK time on Sunday.
