Preparations under way for Heroes Awards night

Being held as part of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s celebrations of the 850 anniversary of the Borough’s first Charter, the awards showcase those who make a difference to those around them and stand to become an annual event.

The three categories are Community Champion, Young Hero and Lifetime Achievement.

Simon Tagg, Leader of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, said:

I know first-hand the strength of our communities so it was no surprise to receive so many good and deserving nominations.

 

I was so impressed by what people are doing and I and the sponsors had difficult choices to make.”

Each category is being supported by a local sponsor: the Community Champion award by Staffordshire County Council; the Young Hero award by Synectics Solutions; and the Lifetime Achievement Award by Staffordshire University.

Victoria Wilson, Staffordshire County Council Cabinet member for Communities and Culture, said:

The presence of strong, active communities helping and supporting one another underpin our quality of life in Staffordshire and it’s right that we should take a moment to celebrate those who invest in making things better for those around them.”

Carol Shanahan, Co-owner and Chair of Synectics Solutions Ltd, said:

This event, and award in particular, is a phenomenal opportunity to honour those young, unsung heroes within the community of Newcastle-under-Lyme and the brilliant work they undertake on a daily basis.”

The Borough Heroes Awards dovetail beautifully with our own Your Heroes Awards and underline the University’s commitment to being both a Civic University and a catalyst for positive change for the communities which it serves.”

The winners will be announced during a charity event organised by the Mayor of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Cllr Gill Burnett and her consort David Faulkner.

Taking place at Keele Hall, in the grounds of the University, on 31 March, the event raises money for the Mayor’s favoured charities.

One is Home Start Newcastle, which supports children’s wellbeing and development and helps families experiencing financial worries or difficult situations.

And the second is the Tri Services Veterans Retreat at Mow Cop, which offers ex-service personnel and their families a peaceful place to rest and recuperate.
