A net-zero Newcastle

Our net-zero road-map

The UK government have committed the UK to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

We have signed a declaration to reduce carbon emissions and are aiming for a reduction to net zero. We plan to reach net zero on our own internal buildings and services by 2030 - an ambitious target!

In line with the UK government, we aim for the borough of Newcastle to be 100% 'net-zero' by 2050. Seems a long way off, but it's not that far away!

Our net-zero road-map is a plan that will help us clearly decide what we need to do to 'decarbonise', when to do it, and how to do it. Some examples of these actions we are taking towards a net zero borough include:

  • installing solar panels on council owned buildings, businesses and homes
  • transforming our vehicle fleet to electric and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) which reduces our emissions
  • switching our heating systems from gas boilers to electric boilers, ground source heat pumps or hydrogen
  • upgrading the fabric (insulation) of council owned buildings, businesses, and homes such as double glazed windows
  • and much more!

Our road-map will give us clear ways we can work with our partners, businesses and residents to achieve CO2 and greenhouse gas reductions within the borough. We want everyone to be part of this journey.
