The borough has 44 councillors in 21 electoral wards.

The role of a councillor

This is to:

  • agree policies about the provision of services
  • decide how our money is spent
  • represent their community and the people in their ward

Councillors are elected for a term of four years.

  • at councillor surgeries where they meet people face to face

Councillor allowances

Councillors are unpaid but they do receive allowances. The details of the allowances are published every year. All councillors must also complete a ‘register of interests form’ which is published on the website on the councillors' page.
